Mathew 6:22-23
"The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good your whole body will be full of light."
"But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"
While these verses are addressing a spiritual matter, something that happened to me physically almost 20 years ago makes these scriptures come alive to me.
Around 1987 or there about, I contacted an encurable eye disease called corneal dystrophy. The cornea would periodically peel off in little areas, which would send me running to the opthalmologist in great pain. He would medicate it, then put a medical patch on it and I would be miserable for about a week until it would heal. I would be fine for about a month to six weeks afterwards, and then the whole episode would occur again.
When it would occur, I would have to close all the blinds in the house and wear sunglasses inside until I could get treatment.......deep darkness was my friend. There was no cure and the doctor said that I had one of the worst cases that he had seen. The prognosis was possible blindness leading to a needed transplant.
The good news is that I had been taught that God was still in the healing business and I eventually received that great mercy from God.
That experience leads me to look at these scriptures above with renewed respect for their implications, because I came to greatly appreciate how precious physical sight really is.......how marvelous a little thing like a cornea (which makes it possible for us to bear the light) is.
So if PHYSICAL sight is precious, how much more....SPIRITUAL sight!!
If the eyes of our heart are healthy, able to bear the light shining on our life, so that we see things (including ourselves) as they REALLY are, then our perceptions will be in alignment with God's truth.....and we will live in the reality of the heavenly (spiritual) realm, and respond to things and people in a healthy way.
Just as physical disease caused my eye to not be able to bear the light coming in, so spiritual disease (sin done to us and by us) causes an unhealthy condition of the eyes of our heart. These wounds are just as damaging inwardly as any physical disease is, outwardly. Our perceptions of reality can be totally blurred or incorrect, causing misery to our life (and those around us), until healing takes place.
The good news is that God is still in the healing business, and we can obtain that mercy from God. The DEEP work of God is needed to heal "all our diseases"......those of the body and those of the heart. He wants us to SEE !! He came to give us life and that more abundantly.
