A City on a Hill

(From The Sojourner Blog)

I've noticed in myself, as well as in those I lead and serve, this intractable tendency to try to live in two stories at once. One story is grand and beautiful and true, the other is small and petty and territorial and mostly blind to glory. One is unguarded, the other suspicious. One demanding, the other allows it all. One stands tall in resting trust, the other is forever frightened of losing the ground it needs, or… Continue

The Function of Freedom

[From The Sojourner Blog]

I’ve been pondering lately this quote by Toni Morrison, which I came across in Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott’s great book on the writing life:

Fulfillment...or Too-Full-Ment?

(Posted from The Sojourner Blog)

I had a great conversation with my friend and coaching mentor, Galadriel, this past week about a perpetual struggle I have with experiencing fulfillment in my life. In the process, I learned a fun (and I think very apt) new word: Too-full-ment. (Thanks to Galadriel for that one!)

Too-full-ment is what happens when you fill your plate, not with things that drain you or don't bring you life, but with too many th… Continue

ok, so is a closet introvert someone who has to "work the room" but would really rather be sitting in a corner with a book?

Hey Michael,
I understand the privacy thing. I've led small groups at several times and after we get started I usually close the group to anyone else as well. I would love to get in on the next round of your group though. Let me know.
Thanks,
Mike.
P.S. I would love to get together sometime and talk about some ideas for men's ministry. I'm in Iraq right now but when I get back that would be cool. Plus it never hurts to get know some other Warriors for Christ in the area.

Michael,
I haven't been in contact here at all since joining, and you were the first to extend the hand of friendship. Sorry, and sincere thanks. I am currently enrolled full time in a doctoral program, pursuing a degree in pharmacology/toxicology to hopefully teach at the college my monastic community runs. Needless to say, life has been extremely busy... but no excuses. The Lord is not a manager, is He? He is not into maintaining the status quo, but is about TRANSFORMATION... radical HEALING... He desperately desires each of us to recklessly abandon our way of living and thinking for His. And to think that this is all a gift! The human heart cannot grasp this... and the human mind is unable to fathom this awesome reality. What is your ministry? It seems transformation....

Hey Michael, I really hate to do this on such short notice, but I think we need to reschedule our lunch. I'm pretty sure I'm coming down with the flu and I figured you probably don't want any. My whole family has been sick for the past week and it's not pretty. How about pushing it back 1 week? Same time same place. Again, I'm sorry, but I don't want to take a chance on getting you sick.

Happy Saturday, Michael.
Was perusing your blog and I must say, you're a great encouragement. Thanks for sharing. Oh yeah, I came across your foray into the world of felines, where you declare that you're a cat agnostic. Hahaha! Funny. And a good point. :-)
