What I Do Is Me; For This I Came

Profile Information

Tell us about your self (optional)
I started a relationship with Christ at age 17, but didn’t start “truly living” until 39. I am now enjoying the full and rich life with Father that I always wanted yet always felt was out of reach.

I am married to a wonderful woman named Melanie who has hung in there through better and worse for 19 years plus. The Lord has blessed us with five beautiful children - three boys and two girls - Madison (15), Luke (13), Morgan (10), Logan (7) and Lincoln (5). We currently live about 1 hour north of Columbus, Ohio.

Some things that make my heart come alive include songwriting (check out my songs on the left - I wrote and recorded all of them in my home studio), hunting, reading, Colorado mountains, watching movies (based on true stories are the best), smoking good cigars (my current favorite is the Thompson Barlovento, Maduro wrapper), home brewing beer, making homemade ice cream, and dreaming up crazy entrepreneurial ideas.

For the past 17 years I have worked as a technical project manager, which feels very "left handed," meaning, "it's just not me." When I was younger my dream was to be a rock-n-roll drummer. I got good enough that I started touring nationally and playing studio sessions. But somewhere along the way I lost the dream. I had to get a "real" job and support my family, right?! So now I'm at a point in my journey where I am beginning to figure this out with Father, holding fast to the words He spoke at the 2008 May Advanced: "Take my hand, walk with me... there's no rush."

A Hallmark Moment

My son Luke turned 13 this past Sunday (7/12). In the morning he opened a special gift that only a father can give: a Marlin semi-automatic .22 rifle with a 4x32 scope. He then enjoyed a fun day at the beach with family and friends.

After the festivities were over and my wife and I we were just about to turn in, Luke came into our bedroom and sat on our bed. He then jumped next to me to snuggle. I asked him if anything was wrong. He said no. Then he asked if I could pray for him. Now typically… Continue

Dirty Windshields

So I'm sitting in the airport at Chicago Midway waiting for my 'on time departure' to take me back to my loved ones and I notice this sign up on a wall that gets my attention. It reads:

“Simplicity trumps complexity.”

The banner is promoting the latest and greatest in internet connectivity. But for me this morning, it has everything to do with my life. As I ponder these words, some thoughts bubble to the surface.

God does not make it difficult for me to find him.

He does not make it difficul… Continue

Why I Don't Go to Church Anymore - 8 of 8

Where can I find that kind of fellowship?
There's no easy answer here. It might be right in front of you among the fellowship you're
already in. It might be down the street in your neighborhood or across a cubicle at work. You can
also get involved in compassionate outreaches to the needy and broken in your locality as a way
to live out his life in you and meet others with a similar hunger.

Don't expect this kind of fellowship to fall easily into an organization. It is organic, and Jesus… Continue

Why I Don't Go to Church Anymore - 7 of 8

Aren't you giving people an excuse to sit home and do nothing?
I hope not, though I know it is a danger. I realize some people who leave traditional
congregations end up abusing that freedom to satisfy their own desires and thus miss out on
church life altogether. Neither am I a fan of 'church hoppers', who whip around to one place after
another looking for the latest fad or the best opportunity to fulfill their own selfish desires.

But most of the people I meet and talk with are not out… Continue

Dude! Nice buck! I've got one with that kind of brownish hair on his head...we hunt an hour 'nort' of Green Bay where it can get real cold! But our biggest trouble is competing with wolves now. A pack of five runs across our property, totally protected. Each wolf eats a dozen deer per year. Not good for hunters!
Listening to your tunes....nice.

Hey Matthew > Another brother pointed me in your direction after he read my discussion " Going to Church...". I read your blog entries on this vital paradigm shift. I concur with your line of reasoning. Am not trying to gang up or bandwagon or look for validation from enough yeas vs nays to create a majority rule on this matter. It is really about being amazed that my personal choices in this area and the subsequent challenges to follow "Father" down a path that diverges from most of my brothers and sisters as well as my own hard wired habits of "doing church" are so similar to the experiences of other believers. I wish I was strong enough in my followership / manhood to not need validation whenever the Lord takes me down strange new paths, but I must admit, my heart sang out with vindication when I read your ideas. You gave me new words by which to hang my inner groans, strains, and longings. The longer I stick to my guns and trust the Spirit's guidance the more my path converges with others of like-mindedness / hunger for that something beyond / deeper than the Christian "Matrix" I sense I am moving out of. The question I have been prayerfully asking for the last six years ( of which this online community seems to be a major answer ) is "If not there, then where am I moving into...?" The enemy has continually used my ambivalence to thwart my faith in the feelings /images / longings for a Christian experience that aligns with the promises of the prophets, disciples, and the Lord Jesus himself revealed.

That's it. Blessings to you. I look forward to tagging along with you.

For His is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory forever. amen

Jeff

Well, good for her! That's important stuff!
I mean, what is the point of singing and writing if nobody listens and cheers???
(Well, I think God ALWAYS does, but His applause are kinda hard to hear.)

Oh....and now I figured out where I got the name Melanie that I accidentally called someone else's wife! Gosh! I have GOT to stop trying to talk to so many peoplein such short time spans! I am beginning to get folks mixed up! LOL!
