My Artistic Statement as a Swordsmith:

All my life I have been completely right brained, using creativity and imagination to express myself. So as a little kid I had no trouble getting lost in the grand epic worlds told in both ancient and modern mythologies, or even creating my own. So when I met Andy Davis as a little kid for the first time, who shared that same creative thirst for adventure and crazyness as I do, I knew I had met a brother at arms. Our friendship and our group of friends growing up have always been centered around our like minded creativity and love for the Lord.

As a swordsmith I hope that my work evokes the feelings I felt when reading Tolkien's epics for the first time, or the feeling when I first heard lines of Beowulf being recited in Old English. To get lost in those tales and learn from the themes and truths they speak of.

I also draw inspiration for my swords not only from my love for epic mythology but some of the places I grew up in. Just behind by grandparent’s house on the shore of Door County Wisconsin lay a huge expanse of tall Cedar forests where my brother and I would go explore and adventure, all the while letting our imaginations take over and run wild. I try to capture elements of nature in my work, be it trough the flowing shapes, beautiful wood grains, or leaving rough textures in the steel. Artistically I hope for these things to further portray the sense of antiquity and depth.

I obviously know that for some a sword may be just that, a sword. But I hope that for those that understand what I am trying to portray, when you view or hold one of my swords, you feel those wild adventurous feelings, and are inspired to live not in violence, hatred and revenge, but instead honor, respect, morality, and love towards other human beings.

*** My biggest heroes would have to be Old Tom Odell, my Opa, and mainly my awesome Dad!

I hope that through my swordsmithing work I might inspire others to use the God given talents that we all have for a good and positive purpose whatever it may be.

God Bless!

Dave D.

Dave - I spent some time on the MAD DWARF website yesterday. Awesome. Both the swords and the web design! I am curious to hear more about how you guys are doing with this thing? Are you guys working full time? How many orders are you getting? More than you can handle? Is there room for growth, or are you satisfied with how things are going? As we hope our ministry The Warrior's Path begins to take off, I can imagine that an ongoing relationship with a couple of guys like yourselves might be pretty useful. Also - how long does it take for you to go from commissioning a sword until its completion? And what are they selling for? $500 and up, or less?? Sorry to bombard you with questions! Hope you time to answer some of them! Maybe you could take a look at our blog - www.warriorspathonline.com -- it's definitely written for young warriors with the same heart and passion that you obviously have. Looking forward to getting to know you guys!!

I have a young man who had no contact with his dad growing up and I stepped in to be a father to him.
He is graduating from UC Berekley in May and i want to get him a cool and special gift. Thinking about a sword. Something to communicate his victory and warrior heart.
Do you know where I can get a sword? I am a bit uncomfortable getting a $200 sword from an online source not knowing if it is really quality or not.
Any suggestions where to find one or even another possible gift?
Thanks
Gregg

I am very excited that you accepted my friend request. I was actually going through old requests yesterday, and deleting those that had been there a while. I saw yours and was going to delete it, but something told me to wait. Good to know you Dave.

Dave, that is one of the coolest things ever! I'm going to check out your site. What's the process to get you to create a sword for me?

Hey Dave, I relizie I did not even ask for a friendship i just extended it. I am sorry. I was wondering how old you are though as I would love to learn from you some time. My grandpa has all the blacksmith stuff and I inherit it and I would like to be able to use it to a decent degree. Tyler

Dave , I will always wonder way God waited to get my heart at 51 years old. That is when God really changed me.Wild atHeart really grabbed me then, a gift from my wife. Been a christian since 1973, a real follower of Jesus since 2004. Maybe it is to show others it's never to late to give your life to him. I became a Knight in my church in April. I gave my life totally to him. I go to a Baptist church that needs to be woke up. God bless, Daniel

Dave , since I joined the brotherhood I'm amazed on how you as a young man have inspired me. I love working metal. Don't have much of a shop.
I work mainly very primitive by most standards. Not only in the craft but in
serving the Lord. I get to lead 6 men. One of which is my 27 year old son Aaron. He has a very strong heart for God. I'm 54 but still growing.
Your heart shows true love and masculinity

I loved the pictures of your work but I am afraid Dohrtoc is about 15" to short for my fighting style. I need an Oakeshott XVa or XVII. Do you think your blades will stand extended sparring?

Oh and yes I will be needing a custom blade one of these days.

Hi Dave, I just happened across your page and had to stop and check out your swords. Brilliant. I've been studying ancient biblical weaponry for a paper I'm writing . . . do you have a good resource to recommend? When my son gets a little older, I'd love to find you again for a one of a kind gift. Thanks!
