Hi everyone!
Closet songwriter signing in to see where this goes. Maybe I'll quit telling myself I'm too old and fat and get the courage to do something......

Andrew, It sounds like you're saying that some songwriters hear the music in their head and some play and work something out- 2 completely different styles. The first sounds like it's a gift perhaps in the raw while the second is a gift that must be developed. I think the same is true or writing poetry which can be lyrics without music. i love writing metered rhymes. I have to work at it but it's not work because i enjoy doing it. When the piece says what I want the way i want, then it's finished. I would love to put my stuff to music but really i doubt it would fit. It would fit metrically but not necessarily topically.

I'm definitely a music first person, which means I struggle with lyrics - especially christian lyrics. I feel as though too much is at stake and place pressure on myself to write the perfect lyric, (because it is about/to God after all), so I end up not writing. I like a bit of comedy in my writing, and therefore I feel sometimes that I shouldn't joke around about christian stuff, so I don't. To some extent, my christian lyric writing is a snapshot of all the dysfunctional and "works"thinking that goes on in my brain.

Does the music side come naturally (am I gifted)? Hmmm not sure. I believe there are people that are gifted and can write a brilliant melody and lyric and arrangement and they "hear" things in the idea that others can't. But I think it is a craft as well - it can be developed and shaped. I have found that the more I have written, the (slightly) better I have become, and I believe that listening to and studying others songs gives ideas and insights into the craft. e.g. I found that there are quite a few songs that use the device of moving from the IV chord to IVm (however you write this) let's say C / / / Am / / / F / / / Fm / / / I've picked that up through studying others songs and used it from time to time in some of my own. Is it nature or nurture? Both and either, I think. Andrew

Steve said "It seems like many of us have capabilities to write a melody, but the real challenge is lyrics." It's the opposite for me. I love writing verse but I've never written music. I've been told that writing music is a gift and you either got it or you ain't. Is this true?

Hi All! Nice to see your remarks! Steve, you might consider connecting with a web networking site called IndieHeaven. It is geared towards independent Christian artists; you can upload your music and sell from the site; you can network with like minded singers and writers; and they offer conferences and retreats to help hone our craft. A friend of mine here in Colorado, just got back from a songwriter's retreat in Nashville hosted by IndieHeaven. I believe there's a worship workshop coming up in April, but that might be with Tom Jackson Productions, also in Nashville. We all need help and a good soundboard from time to time. I have found this group to be very helpful.

Hi everyone. Been gone for a bit but I'm back. Been recording a new CD and I have the cover song on my page along with the bonus track song. My new CD will be titled "Cry Out To Him" I am going to California to the song writers boot camp in September and will get to work with Lincoln Brewster and a few others. I am so glade that GOD has turned me in the right path to spread his word with my music. He flows though me. GOD bless, and keep the music of GOD going. Greg.

Your Ordinary has very Beatlesque or even ELOish type feel. I could hear it past the gen midi sounds. strong structure. You would love PFR They where popular in the states early nineties sounded alot like lennon and mccartney.vocally, lyrically (except strong Christian WV) They even did a cover of an ELO song on a tribute album. If you Google "pray for rain" band
you should com up with something I am 100 percent you will listen to them on more than one occasion.

Storm. About five years ago, I wrote a tune with the heading "ordinary" - the only lyrics I had went something like "don't wanna be feeling like it's ordinary". Please excuse the midi quality of the attachment.

Here is a link to a song with out lyrics. The only words penned are" Closer to the Ordinary" The concept behind the title is "the more complex things seem the more ordinary they actually are" or "what seems so extrordinary to us ie is actually normal in the Kingdom. Also what seems so ordinary to us "like silence or simple taks like washing dishes or walking" can take us to extraordinary places. So "Closer to the ordinary" iin this case is kind of an antimony. If anyone is interested feel free.

I'm new on The RH site. I discovered RH through Daily Audio Bible doing the online study on prayer. I am learning a whole new perspective on being part of the bridge between Earth and the Kingdom. Songwriting, recording and playing are one of my favourite things. So I just joined this little group while looking for allies in the Kingdom. Since surrending to Christ about 15 years ago it has been difficult in finding like minded musicians in my area. Most of the people I worked with BC are either still in the world or just "grew up". God has not taken away my passion for music. I like to work online with musicians using indabamusic.com or kompoz.com or tunerooms.com My wife and two daughters sing and play and are develooppoing something musical (not sure were it is leading yet ) and I am currently working with a friend on a R/B Gospel CD (new genre for me) I enjoy writing everything from Avante Garde to Classic rock to Classical. Any way that is a short synopsis of my musical dimension.
