Connie...I haven't seen you on here in a while but am certainly hopeful you've taken the NCE and passed with flying colors. Any update?

Kyle, I am new to this site and group, but have read through the history of the blog. I'm so sorry to hear about the struggles your wife and you are experiencing right now. I'm a fellow therapist (licensed in Washington State) and registered nurse as well. I've seen first hand the process you're walking through now and pray only the best for your wife.

Guys, I've been fairly inactive over here due to taking care of my wife. She has had, as some of you know, a recurrence of her cancer and the doctors say she is not going to get well
Many people are praying and we have not given up. But I will not have a lot of time for this site for a while, though I am blogging here.

How do you move someone deeper into their journey?

Well, now it's July 27th and Karen's surgery was cancerous, though they think they got it all, she went to a different hospital and got emergency (2nd) surgery and was in 8 more days, so it will be 8 weeks out, they say and some chemo=therapy. This is a long way of saying I'm going to be thinly available to this community, but I wanted you all to know why.

well, guys, I'm sorry I've been absent for a while, but much going on. My wife is going in for fibroid surgery and s he'll be down for 6 weeks and I have no leave at all. (In my current job we get a huge 11 days a year for the first three years.) so it's going to be interesting, forunately she'll be able to stay with her brother in the city where the surgery is being done for the first 10 days so she can rest and have someone to care for her.
I'll be sporadically available until the middle of September due to commitments.

Actually, most places, at least that I've dealt with, don't mind if you call and ask about a practicum or internship. I've only gotten a poor reception one place when I was interning and the guy was a known butt anyway. So I didn't take it personally.
Places that employ counselors know that student counselors need internships/practicum experience, so it does not surprise them.
I'm not so sure I would worry about whether the counseling philosophy is the same as mine as much as it is a type of experience I wanted to get.
But with all that said, I'm a kid/adolescent therapist, though I do lots of family therapy with them as well with adults, and I love it. I can't imagine not being a kid therapist at least part time now, when before it scared me to death.
The reason it scared me was that I had not dealt with my own childhood issues, so I did not want to deal with anyone elses. It worked out that I'm a natural with adolescents and love em lots. My wife, likewise, loves working with little kids and non-conduct disordered adolescents. HTH.

Chuck,

Pretty much what I did was call prospective places and ask if they were accepting interns or practicum students. I didn't think I was going to find anything...and I am not really excited about the one I have...It is not my theory or style of counseling because I prefer to work with adults and this is play therapy with kids (although my personal client is an adult...mother of two children that are seeing my on-site supervisor).

After I found this one... I insisted on an interview. I know my fellow classmates did take resumes in ....some places prefer a curriculum vita. For my current position, they accepted me sight unseen...

As for everything corresponding ... keep in mind that the practicums and internships are for you to stretch and look at all possibilities and to experience something out of your comfort zone! That is exactly what I am doing with this site I am at right now.

And a psychologist friend of mine gave me a good reframe for the experience (especially if it isn't what you hoped for or wanted) ... He said "You can learn from ANY experience...good or bad...if it is bad...you will learn what you DON'T want to do when you get out there in your own practice"

So, don't limit yourself to the theory of counseling that corresponds to yours...be open ...use this as a learning experience and it could make you more marketable in the future!

And Kyle, as I approach having to find a location for my practicum how would u suggest finding a place? Does one just walk in and state, "I am looking for a practicum opportunity?" I know I need to find a situation where the theory of counseling corresponds to mine, I am asking the more practical question. Is it like finding a job where I need to be ready for interviews and a resume, or is it more informal?
