I never had horses growing up. The first horse I owned I got at an auction - pinto 2 year old named Harlequin. After training him I traded him for a mixed breed roan horse that didn't make the…Continue

I bought a 7/8th Friesian filly last year as a weanling. I'll get pics up after I get my new computer - had a crash....sigh.
I've been gone from this site for quite a while but these last email posts drew me back...always horses.
On March 2, while I was in Costa Rica, my horse - the palomino in the picture above, died.
I pulled him from his mom 18 years earlier and we were heart and soul connected. I could get on him in the pasture with no tack and he would do anything I asked. My soul was crushed.
You see, some girls brought him on a trail ride, went off the main trail. He fell into a sink hole compound fracturing a hind leg. When my daughter and son got there they could not get him out and had to shoot him there and leave him overnight. The next day my son, a helicopter pilot, slung him out and brought him home where they buried him.
I land on the solid rock that God is good, however, grief is still a real thing and one must go through it.
My yearling, Lia, and another horse I got 2 years ago, a 6 year old warmblood mare I named Shiloh (gift from God) are being used to heal my heart and soul.
Enjoy every moment with your beautiful baby and may God bless you with many years of joy and connection together.
Dani, he is beautiful. What a joy!!
emma he is very cute... how many hands is he?
Comment by Valerie on July 7, 2012 at 9:06pm Anyone have an older horse that quids? His teeth are all but gone and about 3 weeks ago, the quidding of his grass hay became suddenly 70% of his lovely mountina grass hay ration. The Dr. was out, nutrition discussions, yadda, yadda. The barn owner and I discussed the chopped hay idea...use a mulching mower w/ a bagger on it. The barn owner didn't have time to mulch the next morning so he put in alfalfa hay...guess what, not a quid in sight. Pesky horse. Who of guessed he was capable of willful quidding?
good advice valerie... and I know it's late but I lauged when I read the don't overeat and don't overexcercise... and saw the pics.. LOL
Comment by Valerie on June 13, 2012 at 6:42am Hi Horselovers, Thot I should share some lessons I learned from helping to evacuate horses from the fire nearby. One of the horse clubs has organized an evacuation team years ago and some how I ended riding shotgun in one of the rigs because of how long the fire has been going on. The day before, the person I rode with had been using their rig and had hauled sheep and lama in it. The horses we tried to load took one whiff of the trailer and didn't want to go in. You might want to think about getting your horses used to all sorts of smells and trailers just as a part of their training to make them safer if they ever need to be evacuated. Just thought that might help you for the some day that we hope will never happen.
