Mark....I do love cigars from 'that island we can't buy from here' :)
Mark M Comment by Mark M on August 10, 2010 at 6:02am
I do like a decent cigar...only ever had a "good" few when in England in '81...(from that island we can't buy from here)
Pipes are more interesting to me because of History and collectible potential...if I need more reasonn to be packrat...now if I could get cigar flavor in the pipe...at least during the season (one must go outside...)

Hello All! I'm Joe, Bobbi's husband. My input... With issues like smoking or drinking - I believe that if we keep it forbidden.. or taboo... we make it more of an issue. In other words, if we tell them they can't have something, that's what they'll want. When mature enough, I think that exposure should be controlled and under our supervision. For instance, I come from an Italian family. Everyone got wine with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. It's true, the younger you were, the more water you got mixed with it. All in all, I'd rather have our children come to us than do it behind my wife's and my back.

Here is clip from what may be the funniest television show to ever come out of Canada, The Red Green Show. Here, Red talks about singleness and marriage. I think we can all relate to this story. Enjoy!

I do understand the stats and that smoking is not 'good for you', but niether is microwaving your food in plastic containers. Chocolate's bad for your teeth but good for your mood. You can have a glass of red wine but not white. Have you ever walked by a nail / hair salon in the mall and caught a whiff of that aroma?! Yet we sit in there for hours inhaling that junk all for some girl bonding time and nobody thinks twice about it! We're all on a path to physical death... I say LIVE!!! With PASSION!!

It's odd that you should ask the question.I taught archery at youth camps for 7 summers. I tot ages 7 to 17. I haven't done any real hunting with a bow, just squirrels. My father avidly refused to buy me a BB gun though I wanted one with all my heart. He did buy me a small bow when I was 7 and a 55lb compound bow for my 13th birthday. A few years ago, was giving him a hard time about never buying me a BB gun and he pointed out the bow he'd gotten, and the fact that I'd never bought myself a BB gun after age 18. When I have children boy or girl I'll teach them projectile weapons, as well as hand to hand combat, at least to the degree they show an interest. Somewhere along the line I'd like them to learn to build a fire, read a map and compass, and kill something to eat dinner. I'll also teach them to smoke and drink, operate power tools, and likely to cuss. I also want to instill in them a love for learning, a respect for their bodies, and a desire to look at life a little differently. I'll balance it all by teaching them to love God intimately, and to walk in their unique spiritual gifting...sorry what was the question? I consider cigar smoking different than cigarette smoking, you can buy them singly, they aren't loaded with chemicals, the amount of surface area you expose to smoke is much less with a cigar. It's not, in itself, healthy, but I believe it isn't healthy to do only healthy things. I believe we need to take risks too. We are meant to have feasts and fasts. etc. I'm preaching again, sorry.

Unfortunately, I don't get to make those decisions for my sister's kids. I could introduce a little vitamin L (life) but I had to respect my sister's desires where my nephews were concerned. I was sure those boys would be pansies, but they have turned out great, and to their mother's horror they went out and discovered all those things on their own. I'm guessing my influence on my own kids will be much less than I'd hope it would be, but I don't fear. They'll turn out great.

Ok, my shot.

1. First, the stats are against our whimsy, guys. The longer the exposure the greater the risk of cheek, tongue, lung cancer. 13? A cigar would be a gateway addiction to some. Can't tell 'til the hook is set.
2. They do what they see. Taylor and Colton (12.5, 10.5) see Matt and I head off on horseback or jeep with cigar and beer. We're not anxious for them to be addicts of either. But they see our behavior and hear our stories. A man-thing image is set for the right time to emerge for each. It's not the smoke or the image, but the bonding they see. It's got a time and place. Who knows, might be with one of us, but Matt the therapist has seen too much and won't do it until 18.
3. Hey, almost reminds me of my blog this morning, "IT'S ABOUT TIME" on the Wild Gray Goose (www. newseason.us). That's my current personal blog, but I'm workng up to an active blog, GENDDAD, next week. Will let you all know. Cigar stories figger in.

Wow, some fantastic responses. Bobbi, your reply is no less valid. In fact, it gives us guys a different perspective on things. I would love to see how Joe feels about this issue in comparison with you.

And Andy, let me ask you from a different direction. I am assuming with all of your bow and arrow pictures that you do hunt, or at least shoot target. Do you teach young men and women how to shoot? How do you approach the subject with mom or dad? Or do you approach them at all? One can do far more damage with a bow than with a cigar. But somehow smoking is so taboo these days.

I think it also depends on the man doing the teaching. I was mentoring this young man named Brett, whose mom thought the world of me. I taught Brett how to smoke a cigar - at 17 years old - and how to play poker (for cash) before that. I asked his mom and she asked me how to smoke a cigar (she didn't like it at all). She understood that it wasn't about the cigar, but about the talks that went with it. And about the memories, of course.

Would I have taught Brett at 13 as I was? Probably not. But what about one of my many nephews? Yes, I would. I think it's a "related to" thing. Still looking forward to more replies.

Gary Taylor, I would love to know your response to this one.

Pat, Yes, these Agates are milestones. We haven't been camping for years. Some of these stones are from Agate Beach but most of these were found here in the San Francisco area. The Agates at Agate Beach aren't as big but just as pretty.
