I would love for you to share some locations that you guys have visited with your children. What made this trip special? What type of activities did you do there? Post photos of your trip. Please include the contact information in case others would like to visit. I am always looking for new ideas to try out with my children.

I am just starting this with my son who is three. As I type this I think of places where I was taken.
For starters I loved the beach and so does my son. In his room we have three pictures now side by side: 1) My grandfather with my father as a boy (2 or 3), 2) My father with me as a boy (I was just past two) and 3) Me with my son just short of his second birthday-I could not wait any longer to do it. That is a visual aid to show him he is part of a line.
My parents regularly took us to visit family. I developed ties with them. I have a strong sense of family that I want to pass on to my son-and child to come. Now I gather with my sister and five other cousins for a long weekend at the cabin our grandmother built. My parents took me, my older cousins took their children, and now there is another batch of kids from the younger ones enjoying the same things. And the current crop of teenagers act a lot like we did. Also, when we went to visit his mother at her home of many decades my Daddy would show us where he played and where they farmed and tell us tales of his childhood.
I spent time with my mother's parents and so they covered that base and that town.
We had some good big adventures-a trip to Florida to see an Apollo launch and a trip to Canada. I want that with my child/children.
I would like to arrange some "tours of faith" for my children-maybe to see a church where a great preacher served, to see churches engaged in mission, to be part of mission trips.
On a regular basis I take my son on little adventures to a state park so we can experience "the wilderness".
My juices are flowing but my break is over.
I look forward to seeing what others are doing.

As I mentioned in another discussion, I recently took a trip with my father and my two sons to the coast of Ga. We stayed in a cabin at Crooked River State park , and took a day trip out to Cumberland Island. This trip gave us an opportunity to spend time exploring a huge island with very little contact with the outside world. It was great to see my dad interact with my sons. It was almost like being a witness to my own time with him as a child. There are lots of wild horses, turkey, sea life, and if you are lucky a passing sub from the nearby Naval base. This is a trip that I plan on taking many more times as my children grow.

We live close to a Catholic/Spanish resort (not really a resort but couldn't think of another word) called San Domiano. They have cabins on the Ohio river. They also have a path that runs through the woods that leads to a cvil war cemetary and a manicured area called the Garden of Angels. This 'garden' has statues of 9 Angels including Micheal killing the dragon. My daughters love this place because it's quite and when you're there you feel like your in a holy place. And I enjoy it because it's outside. It's a great place to talk about the Bible, God, meditate, and enjoy God's awesome nature. Sorry, I haven't taken pictures yet, but next time we go I will.

Money and time aside? Proved by the memories that reamin 20+ year later, her are some thoughts.
Those events with long trips (just you and he/she and maybe one best kid bud) or over night.
Dude ranch or an overnight guided trip with a packer or even someone from the local stables.
Hunting. The bigger the game, the bigger the deal. Small game is big enough and likely to get a trophy (still remember the Squirrel victoriously lifted aloft when I was a kid)
River rafting. Four hour trip, breakfast as a roadside biker/cowboy cafe, steak diner celebrating the manhood of a class 4 rapids.
A Challenger Hike. Dad and son/daughter overnight. Time for quiete, reflection, sharing, journalling. One "must" is a Trust Me hike; even 15 mintues blindfolded along some dangerous trail, cliff's edge, etc. Then reverse it. He/she guides you.
Rapelling. Take a group of friends. Prepare notes of life-lessons for the post descent celebration.
Sail for a day, preferably to an overnight spot (beach or even motel) with reflection and life-lesson time. Lessons on the set of the sail, course by the rudder, balance of the keel vs sail are wonderful lessons for life choices and disciple (ask and I can unwrap)
Fishinbg (if overnight AND if you know your stuff).
NOT off-roading, quading, surfing or high energy and distractive events. Goal is soaking in and sharing.

I am heading out to the mountains with my 10yr old next week for his second rite of passage to manhood trip. His first was at the age of 6. Just wondering if any of you guys had any creative ideas as to what to focus on for this trip.

Perpetually blessed,
Todd

Eve, I am a very "self protective" person, however, when God asks me to go to church or mix with christians that puts me in my "uncomftable zone" I will do it because I love His body. So I do think it is possible to be both self protective but not w…
